This song was written for my little sister, Amanda. As the story goes, I had just finished arranging my first two pieces, the "Nearer" song for Sadie and "Irish Christmas". Brand-spankin' new to arranging and SUPER excited to be doing it, I needed a new project. Amanda's birthday was a week away, so I decided to arrange something for her for her birthday.
What is her favorite hymn? "Count Your Blessings". Of course...not my favorite hymn of all time. But NOW IT IS!! Working with this hymn was a pretty powerful experience. When I really stopped to think about the lyrics and what their message really is, I felt a deeper sense of gratitude than I had felt in a long time. Combine it with "For the Beauty of the Earth", 3rd verse only (which is my favorite) and you've got a nice little Thanksgiving medley!
We did this song in our ward a couple weeks before Thanksgiving. Kris Polson and his daughter Caitlyn sang the you know what out of it. Man, I love those Polsons. I still say that if I grow up, I want to be a Polson.
Thanks, ManTa for teaching me about gratitude. You are the bestest sister I could ask for.
